Inaugural “Challenge at Musket Ridge” will take place in August
DAYTONA BEACH, FLORIDA, November 1, 2011 – The LPGA's Symetra Tour announced today that it has added a tournament to its 2012 schedule. The Challenge at Musket Ridge will be held August 20-26, 2012, in Frederick, Md.
The inaugural event will be contested at Musket Ridge Golf Club and will mark the only current women’s professional golf tournament in Maryland. The Symetra Tour will partner with the Frederick County Commission for Women (FCCW) to run the event, which will help support local women’s and children’s charities.
"The Commission for Women is proud to bring the state’s only women’s professional golf tournament to Musket Ridge Golf Club,” said Vivian Laxton, President, Frederick County Commission for Women. “Our mission is to foster opportunities for all women and we believe this tournament will help us achieve that goal. The Challenge at Musket Ridge will showcase the future stars of the LPGA while raising funds for programs in Frederick County that support women and children.”
The Challenge at Musket Ridge marks the return of the Symetra Tour to Maryland for the first time since 2007. The Tour hosted two previous tournaments in Maryland, including one event in Queenstown, Md. from 2004-07 and one in Beltsville, Md. from 2004-05. Past winners of the Symetra Tour events in Maryland include current LPGA Tour member Mollie Fankhauser and former LPGA players Candy Hannemann, Simi Mehra, and Ashley Hoagland. The Symetra Tour has a strong tie to the area as well, with six of its current members residing in Maryland.
“We are excited to add Maryland to our official 2012 tour schedule” said the Tour’s CEO, Zayra F. Calderon. “This area has a strong following of golf fans and we’re certain they will enjoy watching the next generation of LPGA stars compete in their backyard. We look forward to establishing a long-term partnership with the Frederick County Commission for Women and continuing to work with them to help support a number of great charities in the Frederick County area.”
Musket Ridge Golf Club, with its rolling topography and undulating greens, should provide an excellent test as Symetra Tour players enter the final stretch of tournaments in the “J Golf Race for the Card.” Throughout the 2012 season, the “J Golf Race for the Card” will spotlight the movement on the Tour’s money list as players jockey for position among the top-10 money winners. Players finishing in the top 10 at the conclusion of the tournament season will earn membership on the 2013 LPGA Tour.
