COUNTY ENDORSES “CHALLENGE AT MUSKET RIDGE” WOMEN’S PROFESSIONAL GOLF TOURNAMENT
FREDERICK, MD – February 16, 2012 - During a press briefing yesterday, the Frederick Board of County Commissioners endorsed the Challenge at Musket Ridge, a women’s professional golf tournament coming to Frederick County on August 20-26. The tournament is an official event of the Symetra Tour – The Road to the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association), which is partnering with the Frederick County Commission for Women to run the event.
The Challenge at Musket Ridge will welcome 144 professional golfers from 30 countries to the Musket Ridge Golf Club, 3555 Brethren Church Road, Myersville, Md. The tournament is one of 16 events on the Symetra Tour, which is owned by the LPGA Tour and helps to prepare its players for a successful career on the LPGA Tour.
Frederick County is among a select group of communities to host a women’s professional golf tournament. Only 32 cities in the U.S. and Canada host either a LPGA Tour or a Symetra Tour tournament. The event is the only women’s professional golf tournament in Maryland.
Board President Blaine Young commented, “We are glad to endorse the Challenge at Musket Ridge women’s professional golf tournament and commend the Commission for Women for their vision and effort in bringing the Symetra Tour to Frederick County. This public-private partnership will have a tremendous economic impact on our local businesses and will provide a unique, affordable and family-friendly sporting event for our county.”
Commission for Women Past President and Tournament Director Jennifer Charlton-Shuldes thanked the county commissioners for their support, as well as the Tourism Council of Frederick County, the Frederick County Business Development and Retention Division and many others. She commented, “We are grateful to be part of this outstanding venue at the Musket Ridge Golf Club. The tournament is an opportunity to showcase an international field of talented, professional athletes who are excellent role-models for our local children. The Commission for Women also sees this event as helping us make a positive contribution to women’s and children’s charities in Frederick County.”
